Bodyguards & Security Guards: The Ultimate Sports Test

Bodyguards & security forces – top performance under pressure

Bodyguards and security personnel face extreme challenges every day. They must not only be mentally resilient, but also perform at peak physical performance. The Physical Fitness Test (PFT) is a key assessment that determines their suitability for the profession. Those who fail this test have little chance of a career in professional bodyguarding.

Why is the PFT so important?

A bodyguard's physical fitness determines whether he or she can act quickly and effectively in critical situations. The PFT tests the following key skills:

  • 🏃 Speed – quick reactions are essential
  • 💪 Strength – for self-defense and protective measures
  • 🔥 Endurance – long missions without fatigue
  • 🎯 Coordination – precise movements under stress
  • 🚗 Driving technique – control in high-speed situations

The most important disciplines in PFT

1. Sprint & endurance run

Bodyguards must be able to react at lightning speed. Therefore, sprint and endurance runs – often 2,000m or 3,000m distances – are part of the test. These runs simulate pursuits and rapid position changes.

2. Pull-ups – upper body strength counts

Pull-ups test the strength of your arms and shoulders. Anyone who needs to stabilize themselves or others in dangerous situations needs strong muscles.

3. Bench press – maximum power

Bodyguards often have to move heavy objects or people. Bench presses are a key exercise for measuring strength endurance.

4. Bicycle ergometer – endurance under stress

Many tests include a bicycle ergometer step test, which simulates gradually increasing load and checks long-term fitness.

5. Obstacle course – speed & agility

Anyone who wants to provide protection must be agile and responsive. Obstacle courses or a box boomerang test measure agility and coordination.

6. Shooting exercises & driving safety training

Depending on the specialization, there are shooting exercises (e.g. police or ZOS Berlin) or driving safety training to maintain control in extreme situations.

How is the PFT assessed?

Each of these disciplines has set minimum values. Those who fail to meet these requirements fail the test. While fast runners can easily optimize their sprint time, the pull-up test is particularly challenging for untrained arms.

Preparation for the PFT – strategic training

Bodyguards know: targeted preparation is key. Sprint intervals improve speed, pull-ups strengthen grip, and regular cycling improves stamina. Many rely on modern equipment to structure their training.

Kondimaster Interval Timer – control your training smarter

For precise training, more and more security personnel are using the KondimasterMMA from Kondimaster.de. It helps them precisely time their exercise sessions – ideal for short sprint intervals, pull-up bar exercises, and demanding workouts on the ergometer.

With smart training and the right preparation, nothing stands in the way of a successful career in personal protection and security services!
